Montanans deserve to live in communities where they can afford to rent or purchase a home. Ben believes the state has an important role in supporting affordable housing development. He will advocate for increasing state funding for horizontal infrastructure development for water, sewer, and roads to help expand our housing supply. Ben will also work closely with elected officials to support the implementation of zoning code reforms which prioritize early planning, local control, and flexible development. Ben will also prioritize legislation that protects renters from predatory landlords who unfairly keep renters' security deposits at the end of a lease.

Expanding Affordable Housing

There is nothing more special about Montana than our extraordinary public lands. We have to do everything we can to protect them from being sold off to the highest bidder or being polluted by unscrupulous extractive industries. Ben is an advocate for investments in renewable energy resources and will champion state level innovations to bring job-creating renewable energy projects to our state while doing our part to address climate change.

Ben believes in the importance of an independent, non-partisan judiciary and he will fight to protect our judicial branch from legislative and executive over-reach.Ben is proud of Montana's strong transparency and open meetings laws and he will work to ensure that the legislature and Gianforte administration comply with all open meetings and records laws so that our government operates in a transparent and responsive fashion.If elected, Ben will prioritize passing legislation that benefits all Montanans, and he will build relationships with Democrats and Republicans and work across the aisle to pass meaningful legislation that benefits the entire community.

We need to continue to address the lack of affordable, safe, and high quality childcare in Montana. Much of the state is considered a childcare desert where there are 3 or more children for every available childcare spot. For his family, Ben called 11 childcare facilities before finding a provider to care for his young daughter.When families can find a quality childcare provider, the services can cost thousands of dollars per month for 2 or more children. For some families, childcare costs require one parent to stay home with the children because the costs can be nearly as much as a parent earns.Ben will prioritize making childcare affordable for more families by expanding childcare scholarships to middle class families and explore new incentives for childcare businesses to expand the supply of providers across the state.

Increasing Accessible Childcare

Montanans are paying too much for everything from groceries to homes, property taxes and health insurance. Ben personally experiences the frustration of rising prices every week when he buys groceries for his family and pays their monthly insurance premiums. Ben will partner closely with legislators on both sides of the aisle to address the drivers of rising costs and take on corporate interests that exploit inflation as an excuse to unfairly increase their prices.He will work to reduce property taxes and fight to ensure that health insurance remains affordable and accessible for all Montanans.We need an economy that works for everyone and Ben has built businesses and organizations that created dozens of living wage jobs.Ben fundamentally believes that lowering our prices will create greater possibilities for all Montanans.

Lowering Your Prices

Ben is proud that Democrats led efforts in the last legislature to reduce property taxes on primary residences and long-term rentals.However, the fact is, Montana's tax system is out-dated and relies too heavily on property taxes to fund our schools, roads, and government.Montana is undergoing historic changes with the decline of extractive industries in the state. As Montana continues its transition to a more service and tourism-centered economy, we need to take a long-hard look at generating other sources of revenue for the state instead of placing too much of the burden on home owners and renters who are already struggling to get by.We can start with generating more state revenue from the millions of tourists who visit our beautiful state each year.

As the son of two former public school teachers and the father of four children who attend Missoula Public Schools, Ben believes strongly in supporting our public schools with adequate funding, competitive living wages for teachers, and investing in facilities and curriculum that prepare our children for future success.Ben will prioritize creating a state program to recruit, train, and retain teachers who teach in under-served areas.As the director of a non-profit that works with children beginning when youth are 4-6 years old, Ben believes that our best investment in education is to support universal pre-kindergarten programs and early elementary reading literacy programs that instill a love of learning, build healthy social emotional skills, and foster essential learning skills that build a strong foundation for school success.Ben will also advocate for greater investment in business and industry partnerships with high schools and trade schools to ensure that youth are graduating from high school with job-ready skills that strengthen industry and businesses.

Investing in Strong Public Schools

A healthy community starts with healthy children and families who have access to quality medical and behavioral health care. As your legislator, Ben will advocate for all Montanans to maintain access to quality care and protect health privacy and reproductive rights for women. Ben will also be a leading advocate to protect Medicaid coverage from roll-backs that harm children and families.The fact is, too many Montana children and families are in crisis. Montana has one of the highest rates of suicide in the country, our children experience childhood traumas more than any other state in America, and access to affordable quality health care is lacking for tens of thousands of Montanans.Increasing incentives for behavioral health and medical providers to operate in under-served areas and expanding investments in early prevention programs that disrupt generational cycles of poverty and trauma will be some of Ben's top priorities in the state legislature.He will also coordinate with the Department of Public Health and Human Services to enact thoughtful foster care reforms that help support stable families and reduce the disparities of Native American families impacted by the foster care system.
